附上吴议员给总统奥巴马的联署信

    October 30, 2009
    The Honorable Barack Obama
    President of the United States
    The White House
    1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW
    Washington, DC 20500

    Dear President Obama:

During your upcoming visit to China, we respectfully request that you inquire with Chinese leaders about the cases of Mr. Huang Qi and Mr. Tan Zuoren, two Chinese human rights activists.
Mr. Huang and Mr. Tan have been arrested and put on trial for attempting to give voice to the grieving parents whose children were killed in the numerous school building collapses that occurred during the May 2008 earthquake in Sichuan province, China. The parents allege that poor construction and corruption among local officials and builders contributed to the school building collapses. However, these allegations have been stonewalled, or worse, resulted in the harassment of the complainants.
Mr. Huang publicized the parents’ demands on his human rights website, and Mr. Tan called for an independent investigation into the school building collapses and urged volunteers to compile lists of students killed in the quake. For these actions, the Chinese government charged Mr. Huang with illegally possessing state secrets and Mr. Tan with inciting subversion of state power.
The two men were each arrested and put on trial in August of this year. Their trials were fraught with procedural violations, and to date, judgments have not been issued for either Mr. Huang or Mr. Tan.
While we fully understand that there are many issues on the agenda for your visit to China next month, we ask that you discuss the cases of Mr. Huang and Mr. Tan. We simply want the Chinese government to adhere to its own constitution, which guarantees the right to criticize and make suggestions to the government free from suppression and retaliation. Further, China’s own criminal procedure laws and its National Human Rights Action Plan afford rights to Mssrs. Huang and Tan that have not been honored.
It is a tragedy when a child is killed at school. It is an even greater tragedy when the act of asking questions about a child’s death leads to harassment or persecution by one’s own government. We strongly believe that no one who suffers the loss of a child deserves abandonment by or punishment from his or her country.
We thank you for your attention to this matter and look forward to your response.

    Sincerely,

David Wu
