THE Beijing 2008 Olympic Games is the illusionary Olympic Games.
2008 京澳是虚幻的奥运
This is the Olympics that claims to have sold out a record 6.8 million tickets, yet there are empty seats. Many of Beijing's 16 million residents cram behind barricades to get a glimpse of the spectacular Olympic venues, yet the 10 billion yuan ($A1.6 billion) Olympic Green precinct that envelopes both venues is bereft of people and spark.
这是一场好称卖出六百八十万门票，但是到处是空座位的奥运。一千六百万北京居民里许多人只能拥挤在栏杆后面远远的瞥一瞥那些豪华奢丽的奥运场馆，然而那花费100亿元环绕奥运场馆的所谓奥运绿区却人烟稀少，生气窒息。
There has been the fake singer, the fake fireworks, the fake minority kids (they were all Han, and not from the 55 different ethnic groups as portrayed), the fake press freedoms, fake internet access, fake promises.
这里有假歌手，假烟花，假少数民族孩子（全是汉人，不是像标榜的那样来之55不同的少数族裔），还有假的新闻自由，假的网络通道许可，假的保证。
There is a difficulty in ascertaining whether the cheerful welcomes by young volunteers and the over-the-top kowtowing to foreigners are mandated niceties in the national interest, or a genuine passion for the Games.
这里很难搞清楚那些年轻的自愿者的热情欢迎和夸张到极点的对洋人的卑躬屈膝，到底是人们对奥运的真情流露，还是在国家利益下的对人们行为小节的强制命令的结果。
Controversies and non-controversies are airbrushed out. A fatal bus crash that kills two Chinese nationals and involves Croatian rowers is cleaned up on site within half an hour, and never mentioned or written about in the Chinese media.

Transcripts of the press conference questions about censorship are themselves heavily censored.

But expectations of hordes of ordinary Chinese families relaxing and soaking up the Games atmosphere between events by wandering the vast Olympic Green have proved to be wildly optimistic.

Beijing organising committee vice-president Wang Wei said during the week: "We are concerned about the not-full stadiums.
"Many factors are contributing to this. We are now trying to manage that for the Olympic Green. Yesterday they saw not many people inside."

Central to all of this is control. Chinese officials want to minimise anything that will affect the image presented to the Games' 4 billion television viewers, but by doing so, have exposed themselves to enormous criticism for trying to present a falsely pristine occasion.
