In the wake of the violent crackdown on the Chinese democracy activists in the Tiananmen Square by the Chinese authorities on 4th June 1989, whereby thousands were killed, the US and EU imposed a series of sanctions against the PR China, including arms embargo.

In the past 16 years, the human rights situation in China has not improved. China' s repression of its citizens, and the peoples of Eastern Turkestan, Inner Mongolia and Tibet, has not ceased.

China currently has increased arms purchases from Russia and other members of CIS, deployed more than 700 missiles targeted at Taiwan, and has refused to renounce the use of force against Taiwan.

In view of the above and for the unreasonable military buildup of China, UNPO expresses the need for the EU to maintain the arms embargo against China this year. Lifting the arms embargo is not only a threat to China’s neighbouring countries, such as Japan, Korea and Vietnam, but also directly affects the existence of our member’s organization representing Tibet, East Turkestan, Tuva, Burtatia and Taiwan. Therefore, UNPO calls on the EU to maintain the embargo and to facilitate a dialogue between China and Taiwan to allow them to settle their disputes. _(博讯自由发稿区发稿) (boxun.com)
