Diagnosed with terminal brain tumour in May 2004, Teacher Chao Tzang underwent radiation treatment but in vain. He passed away on 24 July.

Hearing the bad news, we were first mentally disordered, and then emitted a paintive and sorrowful cry.

We lose a respected revolutionary!

we lose a good teacher and worthy leader!

Teacher Chao Tzang was born in 1939,graduated B.A in Rangoon University in 1959 and served as English tutor till 1963.

I began to study B.Sc in the Rangoon University in 1961. When we had no class, we often went for a walk to peek “the Moon Tiger Crossing the Sky”, the meaning of the prince’s another name “Sao Hso Lern Hpa”, which our teacher Chao Tzang has never used .

On March 2,1962, Ne Win Military regime seized the state-power. Using the slogan “for the unification of the country”, the military regime abolished the Union Constitution and arrested his father Sao Shwe Theike, the First President of the Union of Burma and “mis-killed” his younger brother Sao Mee .His father later “died of an illness” in Ne Win’s jail. His mother was president of the Shan State War Committee, had to exile and die in the foreign country Canada (his brother Sao Harn, is the leader of Shan and other nationalities of Burma, now the director of EU-Burma Office in Brussels. The article “ASEM Action Alert” published last week is his strategic thinking and work).

On July 7,1962, we, the Rangoon University students demonstrated against the military regime. Under the name of “safeguarding the country’s stabilization”, the military regime shot dead more than 100 students including my boarder fellow-students . I was so lucky to escape home. In 1963 we heard that teacher Chao Tzang had joint to his Shan revolutionary armed force and some students followed him.We admired their heroic action.

In 1964 the military regime met with the Communist Party of Burma and all nationalities’ armed forces for domestic peace negotiation. We saw teacher Chao Tzang there in the Shan group. To support the people’s forces, we Rangoon University Students also joined to the nationwide farmers’demonstration. We called for rebuilding our country into the world’s rice-suppliers as well as the richest country of South-East Asia just as 1950-60’s prosperous period.

To our utmost disappointment, the domestic peace negotiation failed. The military government began to arrest people. The students who had led the student demonstration were expelled for ever from the university. Finally they all went to join the Communist Party of Burma or the nationalities’ armed forces.

First in Burma, then in foreign countries, we heard the information about our teacher and fellow students. Some false news were spread over by the military government, such as who and who lost their life in the battle-fields, who and who ran away abroad, who and who surrendered, who and who are corrupt and degenerate, who and who absconded with valuables, who and who are trading narcotic drugs etc. We eliminated the false and remained the true. We prayed for our teacher and fellow students capable of overcoming all difficulties to win victory. We wished them contributing to their utmost for the people and the revolution.

In 1971, we heard that teacher Chao Tzang had established the Shan Progressive Party as the political guide for the revolutionary army.

In 1976 we were informed that our teacher was forced by the extreme-leftists to take medical treatment in Chiangmai, Thailand (At that time the more left the more popular).Later people said that the Drug-King Khunsa invited him to be the figure-leader of all Shan people. Our teacher did not want to become “Prince Sihanouk” to encourage evil just like the Red Khmer, who brought disaster to the country and the people.

He exiled in 1985 to Canada.

During his exile to Canada, he still has been invited by the revolutionary armed forces of Shan and other nationalities. Later the democratic forces of Burma ,both domestic and abroad, invited him for Burma’s revolution and democracy too. He advises them “Common Goal, Diverse Actions ”, unite to fight against the common enemy. He takes the co-leading work of establishing a real Union of Burma. expressed their greatest sorrow and greatest loss.

They declare to convert grief into strength, march resolutely toward the common destination of victory.

We remember of teacher Chao Tzang's saying:

“With nothing we come to this world, and with nothing we go”

Dear Teacher,

True! you come down to this world really with nothing,BUT you leave us as the Moon Tiger crossing the sky with the colourful rainbow!

With tears fully in our eyes, we send his brother an e-mail:

“Dear Sao Harn ,Please accept our very sincere sympathy for you and your Shan people in your sorrow and loss.Indeed it is a great loss for the Shan and all other nationalities of Burma, including Burma’s Chinese. He has lived as a respected and heroic revolutionary in our hearts since our Rangoon University’s life, He’ll live for ever as one of the most respected revolutionaries in the hearts of all nationalities of Burma.

Sincerely yours
