On March 7th, 2003, Amnesty Youth Group 2210 whose members are high school students sent an open letter to President Jiang Zeming. In the letter, they asked to release Huang Qi.
According to team leader Maria Dyveke Styve, this team held group meetings activities on campus to raise people's attention to Huang Qi's case.
The letter is:
Jia Chunwang
Minister of State Security
14 Dongchangan Ji, dongchen Qu, Beijing
China
Dear Mr. President, Jiang Zemin We want to express our deepest concern for the case of Huang Qi. We are an Amnesty youth group who intend to work for his release.
Huang Qi only exercised his right to expression with the internet-sites he hosted,- a right ensured in Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, that your country has signed: “Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers”. In this perspective, Huang Qi has done nothing wrong. “Tianwang Missing Persons Web Site”, the site where people could find their lost relatives, helped many families reunite. We are sure that such an act could not in any way have had negative impact on the government. The postings about the 1989 massacre and other topics were not posted by Huang Qi, and so he can not be held accountable for their content, and he deleted them as fast as possible. Huang Qi has been detained since June 2000, and he has still not received a sentence. We call on you to discharge his case and release him immediately.
Best regards, Amnesty youth group 2210, Norway
